Curriculum: A snap shot of what’s to come
Here’s a brief explanation of what I expect to cover in third grade
§ Religion – workbook chapter by chapter as well as our catholic heritage, prayers (Apostles’ Creed).
§ Science – process skills, plants and animals, solar system, and rocks and minerals
§ Social Studies – Communities, map skills, Native Americans, pilgrims, pioneers, and Massachusetts.
§ Math – addition, subtraction and multiplication facts, word problems, measurements, critical thinking
§ Language Arts –spelling, grammar, vocabulary, reading comprehension and fluency, writing, cursive, monthly book reports
Book Reports
Book reports are assigned throughout the months of October through May. The projects are given at the beginning of the month and due at the end of that month. I expect projects to be creative, free of errors and turned in on time. Book report projects should not come in too soon. Students are given a month so that the work reflects a month of effort.
Academic Night & Projects
Academic Night is an evening, during spring, for the students to show off their talents. In grade three, I like to have a variety of projects displayed. I will hold onto some assignments and also plan some in school projects to feature on this evening. The main attraction is the solar system project, which is assigned a month before the academic night. All classes are open on this evening so parents may visit other grades to see what is in store for upcoming years.
Important Documents & Details
a. Reading Log –Students are expected to read every day – at home – for twenty minutes. They must record the date, the book and reading time onto a log. Please initial the log, confirming that the student has been reading at home.
b. Book Reviews –Book reviews should be completed after every chapter book the students’ have read. Book reviews are always available in the classroom and it’s a great way to earn extra credit in language arts.
c. Scholastic Book Order Online Information – Every month or so I send home Scholastic Book order forms for students to purchase books. Parents have the option of ordering from scholastic online themselves. To do this, you simply need our class username (3Cbookclub) and password (carroll)
