 November 7, 2009:

·       **It has come to my attention that some of the books I selected for November’s report are not available at the library, besides the Magic Tree House books.  I am working with the library to have several copies of the Pocahontas book brought in and I will also be checking out more selections for the kids to choose from.  I do have a copy of each of the six titles I assigned in the classroom and I will allow students to use those as well.  Sorry about the inconvenience.**

11/04/09:  The official 3C-Reading Log has been sent home.  Everyday at home (morning/afternoon or evening) you are expected to read a book of your choice for twenty minutes.  This is part of your daily HOMEWORK and must be completed.  After you have read, parents must initial the log.  You may break up the twenty minutes of reading or do it all at once.  You may also read more than twenty minutes too, if you’d like.

Our first reading goal is one hundred minutes.  I would like all reading logs to be passed in by Friday, November 20th so I can make sure you have completed your minutes.

HAPPY READING J

November 4, 2009                                    Monthly Book Reports

Dear 3C Students and Parents,

Hello and happy November!  It is time for us to begin our book report assignments in 3C.  Book reports are assigned throughout the months of October through May.  The projects are given at the beginning of the month and due at the end of that month.  I expect projects to be creative, free of errors and turned in on time.  Book report projects should not come in too soon.  Students are given a month so that the work reflects a month of effort.

This year we will be completing our October book reports together in class.  We read Magic Tree House book number 42: A Good Night for Ghosts aloud and we are currently working on completing a book report form for the story and creating autumn leaves for our Magic Tree house bulletin.

November’s book report must be completed and turned in by Monday, November 30th.  If you would like to turn in your report the week before Thanksgiving break, Nov. 23rd-25th, that would be acceptable as well.

This month’s report will be presented as a milk carton cube.  An individual book report form is attached with instructions on how to create the cube.  Since we will be focusing on problems and solutions in our language arts stories and assessments this month, our November book report will also focus on this skill.  Students must identify the main problem (or one of the main problems) in their books and how it is solved.

This year I will tell children what book titles to read for each month’s report.  Students only have to read one book and make one milk carton cube.  Students will have a small selection to choose from, but they are not allowed to do their November book report on any other chapter book. You will have to go to your local library for the books as I only have one copy of each title in the classroom.  This month’s selection is:

  • Magic Tree House #18: Buffalo Before Breakfast

  • Magic Tree House # 27: Thanksgiving on Thursday

  • A Jigsaw Jones Mystery Super Special #6: The Case of the Wild Turkey Chase

  • Calendar Club Mysteries: The Case of the Thanksgiving Thief

  • Scholastic In Their Own Words: Sitting Bull

  • Scholastic In Their Own Words: Pocahontas

If you have any questions please feel free to ask.  Good luck and happy reading!

JMrs. Carroll

p.s. – Don’t forget to log your reading time on your reading log to meet your monthly goal of independent reading at home.

September 3, 2009

Dear 3C Parents,

A FAMILY TIME SHEET for chapter one from our religion book was sent home.  Each chapter features a family time sheet for third graders to complete with their loved ones.  Students will receive an extra credit grade in religion for completing these activities with you.  Please bring in proof that you completed the activity with your child.  Sometimes there is a craft to be made which should be passed into me, but usually the activities involve prayers or other family discussions.  For these types of activities you may simply sign and return the family time sheet, indicating which activity you and your third graders participated in, for your child to receive credit.

Enjoy!

Mrs. Carroll

September 1, 2009

Below is useful information about the 2009-2010 school year.  Please keep this document for your reference throughout the year.

Milk/Lunch Money:

If your child will be buying milk or lunch, the prices are as follows:

          Milk     $.60/day                  $3.00/week

          Lunch $2.35/day                $11.75/week

Please make sure the money is in an envelope with your child’s name, grade as well as dates paid and amount enclosed clearly labeled on the outside of the envelope.  If purchasing more than one lunch/milk the cafeteria staff would like CHECKS ONLY WITH THE EXACT AMOUNT.

Snack:

We will always have a morning snack at school.  Some days snack time is a “working snack” and other days the students may enjoy a “free time” snack period.  Please send a healthy snack.  Fruit, crackers, granola/fruit bars, yogurt and vegetables will help fuel their brains as well as their bodies.  Please let me know if your child has a food allergy; at this time I am not aware of any food allergies in our classroom.

Gym:

Our gym day is Friday.  Your child needs to dress in blue sweatpants or blue athletic shorts, a St. Joseph T-shirt and sneakers.  These clothes are only to be worn on gym days, unless otherwise notified.

Homework:

Your child will have homework every night.  Although students will be responsible for copying their homework into their planners, I will update our website with homework assignments every afternoon.  Homework is due the next day unless otherwise noted.  If it is not turned in, or incomplete, you will receive notification (a.k.a. Mad Bird) of the missed assignment and the homework must be passed in the following day.  This policy keeps everyone informed as to what is going on.

**Warning: too many missed homework assignments may adversely affect your child’s report card.  Please see the 3C Handbook online for more details.  If we all work together, maybe we can avoid an unnecessary situation.

Assessments

Math facts and comprehension tests are given every fifth lesson in our math program.  Therefore lesson 10, 15, 20… are graded assessments.  The best way to prepare for any math test is to pay attention in class and to complete and be familiar with all class work and homework.

Religion tests are based on the content from our workbooks and are usually open book assessments.  Students are also quizzed on prayers and other relevant content reviewed during our religion lessons.

Science and social studies tests are scheduled as we cover material in class.  Every other week our vocabulary tests are based on either science or social studies vocabulary from our lessons.

Language Arts: Spelling pretests will be given on Mondays and the graded test will be given on Thursdays.  Grammar quizzes are scheduled as we review material and tests are usually on Wednesdays.  Every Friday there is a vocabulary and reading comprehension assessment.  (Every other week the vocabulary words are taken from our science or social studies lessons.)

Folders:

Every student has received a SJS folder.  It is imperative that this folder remains in your student’s school bag.  Corrected papers, notices and homework sheets will be sent home in these SJS folders.  It’s a way we can keep in touch.

Book Reports:

The children will be doing a variety of book reports on different genres throughout the year.  They will receive detailed instructions and be given sufficient time to complete these reports.  Expect approximately one book report a month beginning in October and ending in the spring.  Book reports are due at the end of each month.

Reading:

Remember to use the local library!  In addition to reading chapter books independently in class, I also expect children to be reading a “just right” book for at least 20 minutes per night.   A monthly reading log will be kept in the SJS folder and should be initialed each night after your child has read.  I will collect these logs approximately twice a month.   You’d be surprised at how their comprehension and fluency will increase if they stick to their 20-minute a night goal!

Birthdays:

Everyone should have one!  Sending in a class snack to commemorate the occasion is up to the parents.

Art Boxes:

Art boxes will be used to store art materials and other objects students need but may not fit into their desks.

No toys allowed

Electronic or regular toys (trading cards, stuffed animals) are not allowed in the classroom.  If children wish to keep these items in their backpack for outdoor recess or after school use they may, although I would prefer they didn’t.  I cannot be responsible for any lost or damaged toys.  Any other items they bring to school (pencil sharpeners, special pencils, etc) should be labeled so there are no misunderstandings and kept in their art boxes throughout the day.

                                  God Bless,

                                                Mrs Carroll
